Internet training and suggestions

Day 5.

February 6th 2008

The five day Internet Workshop for Editors and Trainees that started on Monday this week has ended today with the trainees requesting for more training opportunities in future to enable them cope up with changing journalistic patterns brought about by the digital operations of the internet facilities.
Throughout the brief learning session the trainer worked hard to impart the relevant theory and practice on the use of the internet and other matters relating to it. The leraning was guided by its philosophical stance of learning by doing
Thus, notwithstanding the limited time we had we managed to learn and covered several topics that included how the internet has changed societies and communication globally, the role of journalism in the age of the internet , the use of internet in everyday journalism and a look at both local and international websites. We are also taught how to find information on the internet and were also introduced to online journalism, e-mail communication skills and the legal aspect of it , basically plagiarism and copyrights as governed by the Copy Right and Neighbouring Act,1999 in the case of Tanzania
More importantly , we were also introduced to the creation of blogs and the linkage process accompanying it , which aspects featured prominently in the last days two days.
It is important to note that the trainer assigned us with journalistic research assignments for every topic taught in order to equip us with desired practical skills.
However, that done and said I would suggest that there be more training sessions of the same nature in the near future to explore new areas of learning for the journalists taking into consideration of the ever changing and sophisticated digital operations of the present times of which the journalistic world .is part and parcel.

We started on time on the second leg of the raining workshop Both the morning and evening sessions were well attended by the 20 participants who were all eager to learn to do by doing. as the trainer eagerly took us through the learning process for the day
Keeping abreast of time, the trainer took us straight into how one can create one’s blog by using the internet and how information such as pictures, print and others can finally be entered into it .
The creation of the blog is done through a number of processes which are coordinated together ; that was later followed by a lesson on the importance of blogs as a tool for journalists in the age of internet.
We also had the occasion to search for and finally read an important speech by an American called Rupert Murdoch he gave to a meeting of newspaper editors on April 13, 2005
Basically, the speech revolves around three important issues, namely media transformation from traditional media operations to digital performance , which is currently threatening the existence of the traditional media that will find it difficult to cope up with the new innovations arising from the digital ; the role of the journalists, especially in understanding the needs of the readership and the challenges arising there from .

After breakfast we set to practically learn by doing how the internet has changed societies and communication globally. The topic consumed much of the day as it was accompanied by practical training on the internet itself which manifested itself in the understanding of the use of the internet to meet several and various obligations in accordance with modern journalism.
The aspect of internet use generated a heated debate among the trainees, especially with regard to the rate of internet usage of the same in Tanzania.
